READING AND PHONICS AT ABBOTS:
At Abbots Langley Primary School we use the Read Write Inc (RWI) scheme.
In EYFS and KS1 the children receive a daily phonics lesson where they practise, learn and review new sounds. Termly assessments take place to help identify gaps in understanding, which are quickly addressed so that all children make good progress and retain their learning.
In Reception, we build from 10 minutes lessons in Autumn 1 with additional ‘fred talk’ games to full length lessons by the end of the Autumn 2 term. By the end of Reception children will know 41 sounds (there are 74 in total) and they will be beginning to read more fluently. These phonics groups are fluid which means children move around depending on their ability, need and the progress they make.
In Year 1 and 2 the children are timetabled to daily 45 minute phonics lessons. We regularly assess the children and put them in homogenous groups according to their needs. These phonics groups are fluid which means children move around depending on their ability and need.
Once the children can read 80 words per minute they are taken off the RWI scheme and they will start the ‘RWI Comprehension’ group. This is where the children will begin looking at texts in more detail, encouraged to read more lengthy texts and unpick vocabulary while still revising the phonic sounds and spellings.
At the end of Year 1 will know all 74 sounds and they will be on blue story books. If children do not make the expected progress, we have an intervention programme that is led by a trained LSA who will focus on gaps in their learning.
At the end of Year 2 children will be off the RWI scheme.
Children in KS2 who still need support with reading are assessed at the beginning of the year and placed in an intervention group to help them make the progress needed. The children in Year 3 and 4 that still need to develop their phonological awareness will receive 1:1 tutoring from a trained LSA. These sessions will happen daily and will specifically target the gaps for the individual child. The children in Year 5 and 6 that still need to develop their phonological awareness will be part of a RWI Fresh Start group. This will be a small group run by a LSA, these sessions also take place daily.
