SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND DISABILITIES

“All children and young people are entitled to an appropriate education, one that is appropriate to their needs, promotes high standards and the fulfilment of potential. 
This should enable them to: 
• achieve their best 
• become confident individuals living fulfilling lives, and 
• make a successful transition into adulthood, whether into employment, further or higher education or training” (SEN Code of Practice, 1st May 2015)

 

At Abbots Langley we support pupils with a range of special educational needs. We have worked with children with a range of needs including:

  • Moderate learning difficulties
  • Specific learning difficulties (dyslexia or dyscalculia for example)
  • Autism
  • Speech, language and communication needs
  • Physical disability
  • Hearing impairment
  • Visual impairment
  • Social, emotional and mental health needs.

Each child with additional needs has individual targets which we review termly. We meet with parents at least 3 times a year to discuss how the targets are going and what needs to be worked on next. We like support staff to, where possible, attend at least one of these meetings.

We have children that arrive at school with a diagnosis and children that have needs identified whilst with us. We always urge parents to speak to us if they have concerns about their child’s learning.

We are supported by a range of outside agencies that specialise in supporting children with specific needs. The outside professionals visit school to observe and give advice to staff. This advice feeds into the targets we set and the day-to-day provision we give children. Some children, with a medical diagnosis or long-term difficulties, have targeted support throughout their whole primary school education. Some children need support for a short time.

 

We have a team of dedicated and hard-working teaching assistants who work with children with SEN. This may be working with a group in a lesson, support work outside of whole class teaching or working 1:1 to assist the child in class.

The National Curriculum emphasises that all children should receive a broad and balanced curriculum relevant to their individual needs.  We follow the guidance in the SEN Code of Practice.
